Fair Ice and Playing Opportunity Policy

Policy Statement

The Nepean Ringette Association (NRA) is committed to ensuring all players have equitable and development-focused ice time, in full alignment with the Ringette Ontario Fair Ice Guidelines. The association requires transparent communication. Coaches must clearly communicate their playing time strategy prior to any league games, tournaments, events.

Purpose

This policy exists to uphold fairness in player participation and to foster trust through clear, respectful communication between coaching staff, players, and families.

Application

This policy applies to all teams, age groups, and competitive levels under the Nepean Ringette Association, and covers all game situations—league, exhibition, tournament, playoffs, and any other organized competitive context.

Policy Requirements

  • Adherence to Fair Ice Guidelines All coaches and team staff are required to follow the Ringette Ontario Fair Ice Guidelines regarding game-time allocation.
  • Playing Opportunity for All Every player should be given opportunity to participate in games unless there is a justifiable reason otherwise (e.g., injury, disciplinary action, or development strategy).
  • Communication of Exceptions At times, coaching strategy may result in certain players receiving more ice time or being utilized differently during specific game situations. These exceptions must be for competitive or developmental reasons and applied fairly and consistently.
    1. Communicate these possibilities with all players (and when age appropriate their families) at the start of the season with reminders throughout the season as appropriate.
    2. Clearly explain the rationale—tactfully, respectfully, and in line with team expectations and provincial guidelines.

Responsibilities of the Head Coach

    • Ensure team adherence to the Ringette Ontario Fair Ice Guidelines.
    • Proactively communicate with players (and when age appropriate their families) if there will be limited or no game participation for any player.
    • Maintain documentation or notes on discussions with players/families regarding playing-time decisions, as needed.

Responsibilities of Team Staff & Association Officials

    • Support and reinforce the coach’s compliance with this policy.
    • Address any concerns or complaints regarding playing time promptly, fairly, and in accordance with the association’s codes of conduct and procedural rules.
